La Roche-Posay Rolls Out New Melasyl-powered Pigment Correctors

Starting with splashy purple-themed debut at IMCAS in Paris and followed by an educational media event in New York City, La Roche-Posay has officially launched MelaB3 Serum & MelaB3 UV.

Formulated with Melasyl pigment inhibitor/blocker, L’Oreal’s new multi-patented molecule designed to improve the appearance of dark spots and discoloration, plus 10% niacinamide, MelaB3 Serum reduces a range of skin discoloration on all skin tones, including sunspots, age spots, post-acne marks (or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), and dark spots.

It is used with MelaB3 UV, a protective and corrective daily moisturizer with SPF 30 to help protect skin against sun damage caused by UVA and UVB exposure, while improving the appearance of dark spots.

TDD sat down with Heather Woolery-Lloyd, MD, Director of the Skin of Color Division in the Frost Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, to find out more about Melasyl.

TDD: Why is everyone so excited about Melasyl?

Heather Woolery-Lloyd, MD: “It is a new novel ingredient to treat localized excess pigmentation. It works via a different pathway than other ingredients on the market. As someone who treats discoloration, dark spots, and uneven skin tone regularly in my practice, I love having a new tool to use in my armamentarium.

TDD: How are you planning to integrate these products into your skin care recommendations?

Dr. Woolery-Lloyd: “It is helpful to utilize products that work on different aspects of pigmentation. I often used a combined approach, and I am interested in adding this product to the tools I use to address these issues in my practice.”

TDD: How do you recommend patients use this product?

Dr. Woolery-Lloyd: “They should be used once daily in the morning.”

TDD: What kind of results can they expect?

Dr. Woolery-Lloyd:  “Most treatments for localized excess pigmentation and dark spots take several weeks to work. Treating dark spots and uneven skin tone can be a challenge, so patience is key.”
